Repair or Replace Your Cold Room: How to Decide

The technical and financial criteria we use every day in Barcelona to make the right call.

It's one of the questions we get asked most by bar, restaurant, butcher and fishmonger owners in Barcelona: "is it worth repairing the cold room, or should I just replace it?". There's no single answer, but there is a clear set of criteria we apply on every visit to give honest advice — not the advice that's most convenient for us.

1. The age of the unit

A good-quality cold room or refrigerated cabinet, with reasonable maintenance, typically lasts between 12 and 18 years. If the unit is under 10 years old, we almost always recommend repair. Past 15 years, it's worth considering replacement, especially if it runs on a refrigerant that's no longer manufactured or is very expensive to recharge (such as R-22, phased out since 2015, or R-404A, increasingly restricted).

2. The 50% rule

This is the most practical rule of thumb: if the repair quote exceeds 50% of the price of an equivalent new unit, it usually isn't worth repairing, unless you just need to buy some time. Below that threshold, repair is almost always the better deal, even if it's the second or third breakdown that year.

3. The type of fault

Not every fault carries the same weight in the decision:

  • "Repair without hesitation" faults: thermostat failure, temperature sensor, fan, door seal, a small gas leak, control board.
  • "Worth weighing up" faults: a burnt-out compressor on a unit over 10 years old, a structural leak in the circuit, advanced evaporator corrosion.
  • "Almost always replace" faults: a broken refrigeration circuit on a unit over 15 years old running an obsolete refrigerant.

4. Energy costs

An old unit, even if it's still working, could be using 30-40% more electricity than a new high-efficiency model. If your cold room runs 24 hours a day, that extra cost really shows up on your monthly bill. Sometimes the replacement pays for itself in 2-3 years from energy savings alone, before even counting the repairs you avoid.

5. The impact on your business

If a cold room breaks down during your busiest season and you can't afford to lose stock or close, sometimes the most sensible move is an urgent repair now, then planning the replacement calmly, without pressure, for a quieter time. Our job is to put both options on the table with real numbers, not to decide for you.

In short: young unit + one-off fault + reasonable quote = repair. Unit over 15 years old + structural fault + obsolete refrigerant + high electricity bills = replace. Anywhere in between, we'll always give you real numbers so you can decide with full information.
